Loch Awe

Loch Awe is long narrow, deep loch in Argyll, twenty four miles long, extending northeast from Ford to Kilchurn castle near Dalmally. The loch, noted for salmon and trout fishing, has several islands, including Inishail, which has a ruined convent and chapel, and Innis Chonell, which has a ruined castle of the Campbells. In the heyday of the Campbell Clan, Loch Awe acted as a kind of natural moat for their protection. St Conan’s Kirk, built by the Campbells ot Blythswood between 1881 and 1930, exhibits eccentrically mixed styles and incorporates ancient fragments gathered from other sites. To the west is the Cruachan Power Station and to the east Kilchurn Castle.
