Lochmaben is a small town and ancient royal burgh in Dumfries and Galloway four miles west of Lockerbie, surrounded by several small lochs. A handsome, spired tolbooth of 1723 and 1741 dominates the long triangular market place which forms the High Street. On the south shore of one of the lochs, Castle Loch, is ruined 13th century
Lochmaben Castle, now in the care of Historic Scotland, which is said to have been the birthplace of
Robert the Bruce. This was the focal point of English control in southwest Scotland in the 14th century.
